The Turkish Ambush After the battle the scene in Broken Hill was a highly emotional one - the men would not allow Abdulla's body to be taken away in an ambulance and it was finally removed in an old dray. Later that day both the bodies of Abdulla and Gool Mohamed were disposed of by the police in secret. That night armed men stood guard at the cemetery and in the gaol grounds to prevent any search for the bodies. The result of the attack and the battle was increased intolerance towards ethnic groups in the town. At the time it was argued that the local German community must have been behind the plot. The night after the battle the local German Club was set alight and firemen had to fight the crowd as well as the fire when a number of bystanders tried to cut the hoses.
Koori Welcome to Broken Hill, the largest town in the west. Broken Hill is reknown for it's silver-lead-zinc deposits and mining, after being discovered in 1883 by Charles Rasp.

Australischen Outback Wie kommt man darauf, in einem 20000-Einwohner-Städtchen mitten im australischen Outback eine Famulatur zu planen? Bei mir war die Entscheidung, eine Bewerbung nach B.H. zu schicken, eher zufällig gefallen. Eine einmal ausgearbeitete Bewerbung kann man in jedes englischsprachige Land schicken, dachte ich mir, nahm den Atlas in die Hand und hielt Ausschau nach Orten meines Begehrens. Dabei leitete mich der Gedanke, an ein möglichst kleines Krankenhaus gehen zu wollen, um eine gute Betreuung und den Zwang des Englischsprechens zu sichern.
Spökstaden Broken Hill Spökstaden Broken Hill ligger insprängd bland de en gång malmrika bergskullar som fick folk att flytta hit. Det blev aldrig någon större stad, inte mer än några hundra personer då gruvan gick som bäst, varav de flesta arbetade i gruvan. Gruvbolaget hade flera olika schakt in i berget, men bara en anläggning för att tillvarata malmen. Ett fåtal ”fristående” gruvor ligger också i området.
