Bill Schitt, (or "Bull" as he is known to his mates), had been dabbling in paints for over 30 years before he decided to turn professional in 1963. His first exhibition was in 1997 at the Brickworks Markets in Adelaide on a Sunday in August of that year. Although he didn't manage to sell any paintings, he was very encouraged by the comments he received that day from Mrs Williams, at the next table. It had always been Bill's intention to retire from his job as a greengrocer's assistant and live a life of leisure, selling the odd painting to make ends meet. He has sold over seven odd paintings now and can proudly boast that one of his paintings hangs in a Mayfair estate in London. Born to humble parents, Jack and Jill, in 1920, Bill learned the hard way how to scratch out a living, working every Saturday morning at the greengrocer's until he took up painting full time at the age of 43. Bill has never married and had no brothers or sisters that would call him their own. He was supported in his endeavours by his parents until 1996, when they returned to England and bought a house in the upmarket area of Mayfair. Never one to let life get him down, Bill can be found painting in the shed out the back of Mrs Jones or down at one of the quaint Broken Hill pubs looking for inspiration. His paintings reflect his simple nature and, (as with many artists), often portrays a part of his life in the lonely canvas. He has recently painted a wildlife series, stimulated by his personal experiences and the strong emotions he felt when confronted by the wild beasts themselves on a David Attenborough wildlife program. His work is mainly oil or watercolour on canvas, but has been known to use acrylic (British Paints) or Gyprock at times. |
